San Antonio, TX – A 59-year-old man was taken into custody following a six-hour standoff on the East Side of San Antonio, authorities said. The dramatic arrest involved SWAT officers, gas deployment, and a hidden trap door.
Suspect and Warrants
The suspect, identified as Manuel Sanchez, 59, was wanted on two warrants:
- Felony possession of a firearm
- Class B misdemeanor theft of property
BCSO deputies with the Organized Crime Division began surveilling the area in the 500 block of Hackberry on Monday morning to locate Sanchez.
Standoff and SWAT Deployment
Sanchez was reportedly seen briefly peeking outside the home but refused to come out, prompting deputies to set up a perimeter and call in SWAT officers.
“SWAT officers deployed quite a bit of gas in the home and made entry,” said BCSO spokesperson Johnny Garcia.
During the search, deputies discovered trap doors in the home. According to reports, a SWAT team checked underneath and ultimately located Sanchez hiding beneath the house.
Others Detained and Stolen Vehicle Recovered
Two other men inside the home came out peacefully and were detained but are not currently facing any charges. A stolen vehicle was also recovered from the property.
Arrest and Precautions
Sanchez was taken into custody without incident and transported to a hospital as a precaution. Authorities noted he may face additional charges related to the standoff.
Safety Measures During Operation
The standoff occurred during school hours near several schools. BCSO notified nearby schools and asked residents to stay indoors due to gas exposure. No injuries were reported among the public or officers.
