Butte County, CA – A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after a violent domestic assault on the mother of his child, according to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.
Sentencing Details
Nathan James Sumpter, 28, was sentenced on Thursday to two years and eight months in state prison. The sentence follows his plea of no contest to:
- Felony assault likely to cause great bodily injury
- Dissuading a witness
- Misdemeanor violation of a restraining order
The Attack
On July 8, Sumpter went to the victim’s home despite an active restraining order. When law enforcement officers initially arrived, Sumpter hid in the home and threatened the victim and her family if they reported him.
Later that evening, he punched the victim in the face and strangled her, as reported by Law&Crime.
Violence in Front of Child
The following morning, the violence escalated. Authorities said Sumpter strangled the victim until she lost consciousness and stomped on her face in front of their two-year-old child.
The woman was left unresponsive. Sumpter, reportedly panicked, called the victim’s aunt before law enforcement was contacted. She was rushed to a hospital where doctors treated her for a fractured eye socket.
Arrest and Prosecution
Sumpter fled before officers returned but was later arrested.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the defense pushed for probation, but prosecutors demanded prison time given the egregious nature of the violence. Ramsey described domestic violence as “insidious”, stressing its devastating impact on families and the community.
