Bexar County, TX – A 19-year-old man was arrested following a dangerous high-speed chase that ended in a crash injuring multiple people, including two Bexar County deputies, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
High-Speed Chase Overview
The chase began on Saturday night when deputies observed Matthew David Castilleja, 19, committing traffic violations while driving a maroon 2007 BMW 335i on Interstate 35 S.
Authorities said the vehicle was weaving through traffic at high speeds, creating a serious hazard for other drivers on the highway. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but Castilleja initially fled, prompting a pursuit that temporarily ended when law enforcement lost sight of him. The chase resumed when Castilleja was spotted again.
Crash at I-35 and North Weidner Road
The chase concluded around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Weidner Road and I-35 North, where Castilleja allegedly ignored a red light, leading to a collision involving multiple vehicles.
- A deputy’s vehicle collided with a red truck and a blue SUV.
- Two deputies were taken to the hospital: one suffered a cut to the head and a possible concussion, while the other reported minor wrist pain.
- Occupants of the red truck and blue SUV sustained minor injuries.
- Two passengers in the red truck, including an unrestrained juvenile, were also transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Arrest and Charges
After the crash, Castilleja fled the scene but was later located at a home connected to his girlfriend, as per KSAT.
He admitted to leaving the scene because he was scared but declined to provide additional statements to deputies.
Matthew David Castilleja was arrested and charged with evading arrest with a vehicle, a third-degree felony. He was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Sunday.
Injuries and Hospitalizations
The crash resulted in injuries to law enforcement officers, adult civilians, and a juvenile. Authorities confirmed that while most injuries were minor, one deputy and the juvenile required further medical evaluation.
The incident underscores the dangerous consequences of reckless driving and fleeing from law enforcement, particularly at high speeds on busy highways.
