Hiker Reports Being Lost in Steep Terrain
On August 18, the hiker sent a text to 911, stating he was “lost in steep terrain without food or water,” according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO). Dispatchers were unable to reestablish contact to obtain more information about his exact location. Deputies quickly located the hiker’s vehicle at the Euchre Bar trailhead, signaling the start of a coordinated search effort.
Multi-Agency Search Launched
Over the next two days, an extensive search was carried out involving California Highway Patrol helicopters, PCSO drones, Mountain Rescue Teams, and K9 units. These teams combed rugged terrain to locate the stranded individual. On August 20, dive teams joined the operation, focusing on the American River area. At 11 a.m., the hiker was spotted along the riverbank and was safely evacuated by helicopter.
“The hiker was tired, hungry, and thirsty – but otherwise OK,” said the PCSO.
Video footage released by the sheriff’s office showed the hiker being safely transported to a more accessible area, where he received care and attention.
