Charles County, MD — A hiker was successfully rescued by the Maryland State Police (MSP) Aviation Command after a 25-foot fall from a tree over a steep embankment in a remote area of Charles County this past weekend.
Hiker Requires Aerial Evacuation
Authorities report that the incident occurred near Port Tobacco around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, when first responders from Charles County Fire and Rescue, the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, and the Charles County Department of Emergency Services (DES) reached the injured hiker.
Due to the steep and remote location, crews determined that an aerial evacuation was necessary to transport the individual safely to a medical facility. Trooper 7 of the MSP Aviation Command was dispatched with the Augusta Westland-139 helicopter to assist in the rescue operation.
Helicopter Rescue Operation
Pilots positioned the helicopter approximately 115 feet above the ground, hovering over the rescue site where responders had secured the hiker. A rescue technician and an MSP trooper were lowered to the injured individual, who was then placed into a specialized rescue device and lifted into the aircraft.
During the flight to the regional trauma center, the trooper provided medical care to stabilize the hiker, ensuring continuous attention until arrival.
