Canoga Park, CA — A terrifying incident unfolded outside a California mall on Thursday, August 21, when a mother walking with her 2-year-old child was reportedly attacked by a stranger who allegedly tried to snatch her toddler. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that the mother is now in fair condition following the stabbing.
Suspect Confronts Mother Outside Westfield Topanga
According to People, the mother — whose identity has not been publicly released — was walking near the Westfield Topanga mall in Canoga Park at approximately 12:30 p.m. when the suspect, Shayne Suffern, 29, allegedly approached her.
“Give me back my baby,” the suspect reportedly said before attempting to attack the woman.
Suffern allegedly opened a backpack and tried to use an AR-15 rifle against the mother, but the weapon jammed, preventing any shots from being fired. Fearing for her safety and that of her child, the woman attempted to flee while clutching her toddler.
Stabbing Incident and Escape
The suspect reportedly chased the mother and stabbed her in the shoulder during the pursuit. In a desperate bid for safety, the mother ran into a nearby Cheesecake Factory, where she was able to alert bystanders and get help. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle, according to LAPD reports.
Authorities responded quickly, and Suffern was apprehended by LAPD officers shortly after the attack. Police recovered an assault rifle, ammunition, and a knife from the suspect’s vehicle.

Suffern has been formally charged with attempted murder, and his next scheduled court appearance is set for August 25. The Los Angeles County public booking records indicate his bail has been set at $5,250,000.

The mother was immediately transported to a local hospital, where she is currently in fair condition. Officials confirmed that her child was unharmed during the incident.

In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, Suffern’s father revealed that his son is an army veteran with a history of mental illness.
“Me and my wife, we sort of felt that it was a matter of time before we got this call,” he said. “Hopefully, it wasn’t the call where he had been unalive. We’ve been seeking help since day 1 after he got discharged.”
He also addressed the mother directly, stating:
“I’m just praying for your speedy recovery. I am so sorry and ashamed of what has happened. I’m just beside myself.”
