San Marcos Driver Faces DUI Charge after Head-On Crash Seriously Injures 22-Year-Old

San Marcos, CA – A suspected DUI crash in North County has left a 22-year-old man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and landed another driver behind bars on multiple felony charges, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Head-On Collision on Cox Road

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Cox Road and Mulberry Drive in San Marcos. Authorities say Manuel Leon Villanueva, 42, was attempting to pass another car in his Nissan minivan when things quickly turned dangerous.

While trying to overtake, Villanueva allegedly sideswiped one vehicle before slamming head-on into an oncoming Lexus sedan, causing significant damage and trauma.

Young Victim Suffers Critical Injuries

Inside the Lexus, a 22-year-old male driver bore the brunt of the impact. Emergency medical crews arrived at the scene and transported the young man to a nearby hospital. The Times of San Diego reported that he suffered life-threatening injuries, though his identity has not yet been made public.

The extent of his injuries has raised concerns about his long-term recovery, as authorities continue to monitor his condition.

Driver Booked on DUI and Reckless Driving Charges

Villanueva sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated on-site before being taken into custody. He has since been booked into the Vista County Jail on suspicion of:

  • Driving under the influence (DUI) causing great bodily injury
  • Reckless driving

Sgt. Jeremy Collis of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that alcohol is believed to be a significant factor in the crash. Further toxicology tests are expected to support the charges as the investigation continues.

“This is a clear reminder of the dangers of impaired driving,” Collis stated.

DUI-Related Accidents Continue to Rise

This incident highlights a growing concern in San Diego County and across California—an increase in DUI-related collisions, many of which involve innocent victims. According to state data, drivers under the influence contribute to hundreds of serious injuries and fatalities each year.

Local officials urge drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel impaired and to always consider designated drivers or rideshare options.

What Comes Next

The case remains under active investigation. Authorities are working to reconstruct the crash and determine if speed or other infractions played a role. Villanueva is expected to face formal charges in the coming days.
