Kansas City Mother Remembers Son Killed During Carjacking Attempt, Vigil Held One Year Later

Kansas City, MO — One year after her son was tragically shot and killed at a BP gas station on the corner of Linwood Boulevard and Indiana Avenue, Tammy DeHaan continues to grapple with the pain of his loss.

“In all my life, I never thought I would lose my son to pumping gas,” she said during a vigil held at the same location.
“I can tell you that grief for the loss of a child, no matter how old he is. It’s an excruciating, painful grief.”

The Incident That Changed Everything

According to Fox4KC, court records indicate that Lorenzo Johnson attempted to steal DeHaan’s car on August 24, 2024. When DeHaan’s son Michael tried to resist, Johnson shot him and then ran over his body. The violent act left the community in shock and deeply impacted his family and friends.

Returning to the site of the tragedy has been emotionally overwhelming for Tammy.

“I feel him. I see him everywhere, but it’s hard to see where he died. It’s hard to see the man that shot him. It’s very difficult,” she said.

Even routine reminders, like passing ambulances with sirens, bring back painful memories.

“That kills me. I still get goose bumps every time I hear sirens. It brings back a lot of bad memories.”

Vigil Marks the “Un-iversary”

Friends, family, and community members gathered at the BP station to remember Michael, releasing balloons in his honor at the close of the vigil. Michelle Norris, with Corey’s Network, explained the concept of the “un-iversary”:

“It’s important that we always recognize these dates because if we don’t recognize these dates, it’s almost like our loved one has been forgotten. So it’s important for each individual when that anniversary comes around, to be able to recognize that loss and to recognize the love that is still there.”

Tammy now volunteers with Corey’s Network, finding purpose in helping others who have suffered loss.

“I didn’t think I could live without Mike, and now I’m helping other people because of him.”

Remembering Michael’s Impact

Even in death, Michael’s influence in the Kansas City community remains strong. Tammy shared that she received countless letters acknowledging the positive mark he left on those around him.

“I got tons of letters when he passed away, a lot of them that I didn’t even know. But I’ll tell you, the day I left that celebration of life, I was never more proud of my son.”

Legal Proceedings Moving Forward

The suspect, Lorenzo Johnson, is set to stand trial on December 15. He faces eight charges related to the incident, including second-degree murder, as authorities continue to pursue justice for Michael.
