Eugene, OR — A 21-year-old University of Oregon student tragically passed away following a bicycle accident earlier this month. Authorities say the young woman suffered multiple broken bones and a traumatic brain injury after being struck by a car while riding her bike in a crosswalk.
Victim Identified as Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa
According to the Eugene Police Department, the victim has been identified as Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa. The incident occurred on August 8, around 7:48 p.m., at a crosswalk on Hilyard Street, northeast of the intersection with E. Eighth Avenue. Figueroa was riding her bike when she was hit by an Audi A4.
“Bystanders performed CPR on Figueroa, and she was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries by the Eugene Springfield Fire Department,” said Melinda McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Eugene Police Department (source).
Cause of Crash Under Investigation
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances that led to the crash. McLaughlin emphasized that the cause of the collision is under review, and no additional details regarding the driver or any charges have been released.
“The investigation is ongoing, and we are working to understand all the factors involved in this tragic accident,” McLaughlin added.

Figueroa had come to the United States from Mexico with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, according to a GoFundMe page initially launched to assist with her recovery. The page described her as a dedicated student who was passionate about achieving her dreams and contributing to her community.
The University of Oregon confirmed her passing, and the campus community has been offered grief and counseling resources. Students who knew Figueroa can access support through University Counseling Services, which is open until 5 p.m. on weekdays and provides 24-hour crisis support at 541-346-3227. Additionally, the Duck Nest at E245 University Health Services offers a space for students to practice self-care and life balance, staffed by Peer Wellness Advocates.
