Brooklyn, NY – Two alleged members of the “5zzly” crew of the Bronx-based Blood Hounds Brims gang have pleaded guilty to multiple armed carjackings, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
Defendants and Charges
Jacquell Blackwell, 20, of the Bronx, and Abdoul Azika, 21, of the Bronx, admitted in court to committing armed carjackings and now face up to 15 years in federal prison for their crimes.
Details of the Incidents
Court documents show that on March 19, 2023, the defendants approached a vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Garden City. They allegedly opened the doors, pointed a knife and gun at the driver’s face, and stole the car.
Blackwell admitted to an additional armed carjacking in Elmont on June 7, 2023, while Azika admitted to two prior carjackings in South Farmingdale and Massapequa on June 5, 2022.
Official Statement
United States Attorney Jacquelyn M. Nocella commented on the case:
“Blackwell and Azika, wielding weapons and threats of grievous harm, forced their victims to give up their vehicles and instilled terror in their communities. They will now be held accountable for their crimes, and our Office will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to eradicate gangs responsible for violent crime.”
Community Impact of Armed Carjackings
Incidents like these cause fear and disruption in neighborhoods, as victims are threatened at gunpoint or with knives. Armed carjackings not only endanger the individuals involved but also undermine public safety and community trust.
Law Enforcement Efforts
Federal and local law enforcement agencies continue to work together to target gang activity and violent crime. Prosecutors emphasize that gang members involved in armed theft and intimidation will be held accountable under federal law.
How to Protect Yourself from Carjackings
- Always lock your doors and roll up windows in residential and public areas.
- Be alert when approaching or leaving your vehicle, especially in poorly lit areas.
- Keep your phone accessible to call 911 immediately if threatened.
- Avoid confrontation; if confronted, comply and prioritize safety, then report the incident.
Conclusion
The guilty pleas of Blackwell and Azika highlight the federal commitment to prosecuting gang-related violent crimes. As per Pix11, their sentences will be determined by a federal judge based on federal sentencing guidelines, serving as a warning to others involved in similar criminal activity.
