LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A dramatic incident involving teenagers and police K9s unfolded recently in Lee County, where two of the teens allegedly assaulted police dogs during their arrest.
The Stolen Car and Foot Chase
The chase began when five teenagers fled on foot after crashing a stolen car. The vehicle, a gray Toyota Camry, was reported stolen earlier that morning from a residence in Lee County. The teens attempted to escape after getting the car stuck in a ditch near Buckingham Road, which had already drawn the attention of local deputies.
Residents in the area, like Ethan Swanson, noticed the commotion and snapped a photo of the scene. “Three cop cars were booking it down Industry,” said Swanson, who witnessed the situation unfold near his grandmother’s house.
“I pulled into my grandma’s and saw some commotion in front of her neighbor’s house. There was a car in the ditch, and two or three cop cars were surrounding it.”
K9 Confrontation
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, during the arrest, two of the teens assaulted the police K9s. One of the teens reportedly put a K9 in a headlock, while the other attempted to submerge the dog’s nose underwater. Fortunately, both K9s are okay, with one suffering only a minor scratch on its nose as per WINK News.
Teen Arrests and Charges
The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were initially responding to an unrelated call on Buckingham Road when they observed the stolen car make a sudden U-turn and become stuck in a ditch. The five teens then exited the car and fled on foot.
Swanson recalled, “I guessed that the fugitives probably crashed the car and then booked it through the neighbor’s yard and ran into the woods behind our properties.”
All five teens now face charges, including grand theft auto and resisting arrest without violence. Additionally, two of them have been charged with battery on a police K9.

Swanson, reflecting on the teens’ actions, noted, “I understand they were trying to get away, but at the same time, you’re picking up more charges by running.” The incident serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of fleeing from law enforcement and assaulting police animals.
