Two Utah Police Officers Shot and Killed During Domestic Disturbance Response, Suspect in Custody

Tremonton, UT — Two police officers were tragically shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Tremonton, Utah, Sunday night. Authorities confirmed the suspect was arrested after bystanders intervened, persuading him to drop his weapon.

Officers Identified as Heroes, Gunfire Erupts During Domestic Dispute

The officers were identified as Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, of the Tremonton-Garland Police Department. According to a news release from CNN, police were initially called to a 911 hang-up from a home in Tremonton, a city with about 13,000 residents located in northern Utah. Sgt. Sorensen was the first officer to arrive and began speaking with a person at the residence. It was then that the suspect emerged with a gun.

“The male opened fire on the officer, striking and killing the officer,” police reported.

As Officer Estrada arrived to assist, he was also shot and killed by the same suspect.

Deputy and Police Dog Injured in the Line of Duty

In addition to the tragic deaths of the officers, a Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also shot while responding to help. The deputy was released from the hospital on Monday, while the dog was said to be in fair condition following treatment.

Police Chief Chad Reyes of Brigham City expressed deep admiration for the fallen officers: “These officers are definitely heroes. We really don’t know what we’re walking into when we respond to these calls, and they are one of the most dangerous events we can be dispatched on.”

Bystanders Help in Suspect’s Surrender

After the shooting, bystanders at the scene convinced the suspect to drop his weapon, allowing up to 50 officers from multiple agencies, including SWAT teams, to safely respond. Police confirmed that the home was cleared, ensuring no further threats existed.

The scene was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, and residents described the area as a typical suburban neighborhood, with a trampoline and children’s pool visible on the front lawn.

Suspect Arrested, Faces Multiple Charges

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the suspect or the wounded deputy.

“This is a terrible and tragic night,” said Utah Governor Spencer Cox in a statement. He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the slain officers, joining the state in mourning their loss.

Remembering Sgt. Sorensen and Officer Estrada

Both officers were well-respected in their community. Sgt. Sorensen had dedicated 17 years to law enforcement and had recently been promoted to sergeant, with his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for the following Friday.

“He was supposed to be sworn into his new role on Friday,” the department shared.

Officer Estrada had worked as a jail officer in Box Elder County before joining the Tremonton-Garland Police Department. Described by colleagues as a devoted father and husband, Estrada was passionate about his job, particularly enjoying his time patrolling and interacting with the community.

Tremonton: A Small Town in Shock

Tremonton, a small town known for its murals and scenic routes to national parks, was shaken by the loss of these two officers. Residents described the town as a peaceful community, though this tragedy has deeply affected its citizens.
