Sturgis, SD – Authorities in South Dakota announced the largest methamphetamine seizure in the state’s Highway Patrol history, after troopers intercepted a vehicle carrying more than 207 pounds of crystal meth with an estimated street value of $12 million.
According to Governor Larry Rhoden, the bust happened around 7:57 p.m. on August 9, 2025, when a Highway Patrol trooper stopped a 42-year-old male driver for speeding on Interstate 90 near Sturgis. The driver, who officials say is a non-citizen, is now facing immigration proceedings.
Traffic Stop Turns Into Historic Drug Bust
During the stop, the trooper noticed signs of possible criminal activity. A police service dog alerted to the presence of drugs, prompting a search of the vehicle. Inside, officers discovered 207.24 pounds of crystal methamphetamine hidden inside, along with drug paraphernalia. The vehicle was seized as part of the investigation.
Governor Rhoden praised the work of the troopers, stating:
“We are taking action to protect the people of South Dakota from criminals and drug traffickers. Our Highway Patrol showed incredible professionalism in achieving this record drug bust.”
The seizure is part of Operation: Prairie Thunder, a multi-agency effort targeting drug trafficking and other criminal activity as reported by DRG.
Charges Against the Driver
The driver, whose name has not been released, is charged with:
- Felony Distribution/Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance II
- Felony Possession of a Controlled Drug/Substance Schedule II
- Misdemeanor Possession or Use of Drug Paraphernalia
Under U.S. law, the driver is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Coordination With Federal Agencies
This arrest marks the eighth non-citizen stopped by the South Dakota Highway Patrol since it entered a 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The program allows state officers to coordinate with ICE in transferring certain suspects to federal custody.
Agencies assisting in the investigation include the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, and Rapid City Police Department.
The Broader Fight Against Meth in South Dakota
Methamphetamine continues to be a major law enforcement concern in South Dakota, with law enforcement emphasizing the dangers posed to communities. Officials say seizures like this not only remove dangerous drugs from circulation but also disrupt major trafficking operations.
Governor Rhoden reaffirmed the state’s stance:
“I promised my administration would keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free – and we will continue to deliver on that promise through Operation: Prairie Thunder.”
