East Palo Alto, CA – A woman was killed and several others injured early Sunday morning in a four-vehicle pileup on Highway 101, which authorities believe was caused by a suspected DUI driver.
The collision occurred around 2 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway, just south of University Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Sequence of Events
Investigators say the crash began when an Acura SUV rear-ended a Toyota SUV. Shortly afterward, a white Subaru SUV crashed into the Toyota before careening into the highway’s concrete center median.
A BMW sedan was also involved, though the CHP has not yet confirmed which vehicle it collided with during the sequence of crashes.
Fatality and Injuries
Paramedics arrived to find the Subaru’s driver, a woman whose identity has not yet been released, dead at the scene. As per KTVU, authorities are withholding her name until her family is notified.
The driver and a passenger in the Toyota SUV suffered major injuries, while the drivers of the Acura and BMW sustained minor injuries. All injured individuals were transported to Stanford Hospital for treatment.
DUI Arrest
The CHP reported that the Acura’s driver, identified only as a man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The ongoing investigation will determine his level of impairment and whether additional charges will be filed.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the CHP Redwood City Area Office at 650-779-2700.
The Dangers of Driving Under the Influence
Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities in the United States. Alcohol and drugs impair reaction time, judgment, and coordination, increasing the likelihood of severe crashes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 37 people die in DUI-related crashes every day nationwide. These accidents often involve multiple vehicles and result in life-altering injuries for survivors.
Safety advocates emphasize the importance of using designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or public transportation after consuming alcohol. Communities continue to push for stronger penalties and increased public awareness to prevent these tragedies.
