Indianapolis, IN – A Lyft driver has been arrested and charged after allegedly attempting to kidnap a woman and her 2-month-old child during a ride on the city’s northeast side, according to court documents released this week.
Ride Turns Terrifying After Cancelled Trip
The incident occurred on August 5 when the woman summoned a Lyft ride from her home on North Meridian Street, intending to be dropped off near East 34th Street and North Sherman Drive. The driver, identified as Francky Lahens, allegedly canceled the ride after pickup, telling the woman, “I don’t know why it did that,” and continued driving.
Shortly after, Lahens missed the intended turn, prompting the woman to question the route. Despite her concerns, the driver continued eastbound, and the woman reported hearing him say, “Oh baby, oh baby,” repeatedly during the ride. She attempted to exit the vehicle, but was trapped by child safety locks.
Desperate Escape and Safe Recovery
The woman told police that as the ride continued toward the Spanish Oaks apartment complex, Lahens rolled down the passenger window to “console” the crying infant. Seizing the opportunity, she reached outside to open the door using the exterior handle.
Lahens allegedly slammed on the brakes, but the woman managed to escape with her baby and ran to a bystander for help as reported by FoxIndy.
She was later picked up by a family member, who had been tracking her location in real-time, and transported safely to a nearby BP gas station. Fortunately, neither the woman nor the child were injured.
Police Identify and Arrest Suspect
Using a receipt from the Lyft app, which included Lahens’ photo and vehicle description—a white Chevrolet Malibu—officers located the suspect at the Spanish Oaks complex and arrested him. He was wearing clothing that matched the woman’s description at the time of the incident.
Charges Filed in Marion County
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Francky Lahens with the following:
- Kidnapping of a child under 14 (Level 5 Felony)
- Two counts of kidnapping using a vehicle (Level 5 Felony)
- Criminal confinement of a child under 14 (Level 5 Felony)
- Criminal confinement using a vehicle (Level 5 Felony)
Lahens is being held pending his initial hearing, scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m. in Marion Superior Court 21. His jury trial has been set for October 16.
