Midland, TX – A former Midland ISD teacher is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly using nearly $25,000 in booster club funds for personal expenses, including car payments, utility bills, and DoorDash orders.
Investigation Sparked by Booster Club President
The allegations came to light on June 6 when the San Jacinto Orchestra Booster Club president filed a complaint with the Midland Police Department. She reported discovering multiple unauthorized charges after gaining access to the club’s account. According to police affidavits, the suspicious activity was traced back to Katherine Faye Brock, 44, who previously served as the club’s treasurer.
The complaint revealed that the unauthorized charges had been occurring since October 2022, while Brock was still employed as a teacher at Pease Elementary School as reported by YourBasin.
Personal Expenses Allegedly Charged to Club Funds
A thorough financial review revealed nearly $25,000 in misused funds, allegedly spent on:
- Car payments
- New tires
- Utility bills
- DoorDash and grocery purchases
- Additional personal expenses
The investigation concluded that the fraudulent use of the booster debit card continued until August 2024, just months before Brock was removed from her position with the club in November.
Arrest and Legal Developments
After compiling the financial evidence, detectives scheduled an interview with Brock on August 1, but she failed to appear or reschedule. A warrant was issued, and she was arrested on August 4 for misappropriation of funds, a state jail felony in Texas.
Brock has since been released from the Midland County Detention Center on an undisclosed bond. The school district confirmed that she is no longer employed by MISD and will not be returning to the classroom.
Understanding the Impact of Fund Misuse
Booster clubs often rely on community donations and volunteer leadership to provide support for school programs, such as music and athletics. Misuse of such funds undermines trust and can damage student opportunities.
Dangers of Financial Misconduct in Schools
Misappropriation of school-related funds is not only a legal issue but also a breach of community trust. Educators are held to a high standard, and financial misconduct — even outside the classroom — can have lasting impacts on a district’s reputation and donor engagement.
Communities are encouraged to implement stricter financial oversight, including dual-signature requirements and regular audits, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
