Rensselaer County, NY — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood advisory for Rensselaer County, in effect until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, warning of minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas due to intense rainfall.
Advisory Details and Risks
The NWS cautions that flooding is expected in low-lying zones, urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid flooded roads.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” the NWS emphasized.
A flood advisory means flooding isn’t expected to be severe enough to warrant a flood warning but can still cause significant inconvenience and pose risks to life and property if precautions are not taken.
Understanding Weather Alerts
The NWS outlines different levels of flood alerts:
- Flood Watch: Conditions are favorable for flooding — stay prepared.
- Flood Advisory: Flooding is possible but not severe — be aware and cautious.
- Flood Warning: Flooding is occurring or imminent — take action.
- Flash Flood Warning: A sudden and dangerous inundation is happening or about to occur — move immediately to higher ground.
Safety Recommendations During a Flood
Officials urge residents to follow these steps:
- Seek higher ground if in a flood-prone area or camping in low-lying spots.
- Follow evacuation orders promptly and secure your home before leaving.
- Disconnect utilities to prevent electrical hazards if time allows.
- Avoid basements or submerged areas with electrical outlets or cords.
- Stay away from floodwaters — just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep a person off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away most vehicles.
If trapped by rising water, move to the highest point available and call 911.
Driving Safety During Heavy Rain
The NWS also advises motorists to take extra precautions:
- Avoid parking or walking near culverts and drainage ditches.
- Maintain a greater following distance to account for reduced traction.
- Slow down and avoid sudden braking.
- Drive in middle lanes where water is less likely to accumulate.
- Turn on headlights to improve visibility and be aware of blind spots.
- Be cautious during the first 30 minutes of rainfall when roads are slickest.
- Keep distance from large trucks to reduce spray and loss of visibility.
- If visibility is too poor, pull over safely, ideally beyond guardrails, and activate hazard lights.
What to Do in Such Weather
During prolonged heavy rain:
- Check local forecasts frequently.
- Plan routes to avoid flood-prone areas.
- Keep an emergency kit with water, snacks, flashlight, and first aid in your vehicle.
- Inform someone of your travel plans if driving in bad weather.
