Rockford, IL — A 22-year-old man is dead after an early morning shooting in a Rockford park, and police are now asking for the public’s help in the ongoing investigation.
Victim Identified as Lewis Brown III
According to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as Lewis Brown III, a Rockford resident. An autopsy confirmed that Brown died from a gunshot wound, officials said.
The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, August 4, when Rockford Police Department officers were dispatched at 1:58 a.m. to a parking lot at Blackhawk Park, located at 101 15th Avenue. There, they found Brown suffering from a gunshot injury.
“Officers were told there had been an argument followed by shots fired, striking Brown,” the department said in a statement.
Pronounced Dead at the Hospital
Brown was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 2:54 a.m., according to officials.
Police Seeking Witnesses, Tips
Authorities have not released any suspect information or confirmed whether the shooter is known to law enforcement. The investigation remains active, and police are urging community members to come forward.

This is at least the second fatal shooting in Rockford in recent weeks, as gun violence continues to be a pressing issue for local law enforcement and community leaders.
