Forest Falls, CA — A hiker was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after slipping near Big Falls in the San Bernardino Mountains and plunging about 25 feet onto rocks below. According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, emergency crews responded to the scene after hearing screams for help coming from the steep waterfall area.
Fall Occurred on Slippery Section of Waterfall
The incident happened around 3:45 p.m., when a bystander at Big Falls Trail reported hearing cries for help coming from midway up the falls, but could not see the injured person.
“The hiker lost his footing while trying to cross a wet, slippery section of the waterfall and plummeted roughly 25 feet into a rocky pool below,” San Bernardino County Fire said in a social media post.
The terrain near the waterfall is notoriously rugged, and officials say they frequently respond to accidents at the location, many of them serious.
Specialized Helicopter Rescue Deployed
After locating the victim, firefighters performed an on-site medical assessment and determined that air extraction was the safest option due to the challenging terrain and the nature of the man’s injuries.
A hoist-capable helicopter was dispatched to the scene. A paramedic was lowered by cable to the injured hiker’s location, and working with ground crews, they secured the man into a stokes basket — a specialized stretcher for rugged rescues.
Video captured the dramatic moment the hiker was airlifted out of the canyon and flown to a nearby trauma center. His current condition has not been released.
Officials Urge Caution at Popular but Dangerous Site
The San Bernardino County Fire Department emphasized that Big Falls, though scenic and popular, has become a frequent site of dangerous accidents.
“We respond to incidents at this popular location often, where people are seriously injured,” the department wrote. “Please make smart choices and stay safe.”
Officials are reminding hikers to:
- Stay on marked trails
- Avoid slippery rock surfaces
- Use caution near waterfalls and steep terrain
- Wear proper hiking footwear
Multiple Emergency Units Responded
Several agencies assisted in the rescue, including:
- San Bernardino County Fire rescue unit
- Fire engine and battalion chief
- Public information officer
- Rescue helicopter crew
No other injuries were reported during the operation.
