Macon, GA — A 39-year-old man was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler late Sunday night on Interstate 75 in Macon, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner Leon Jones. Authorities are treating the incident as an accident, though the case remains under investigation.
The victim, identified as Thomas Lucree, was pronounced dead at the scene in the early morning hours of Monday, officials confirmed.
Incident Reported Just Before Midnight
According to the News Release, the crash occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sunday on the northbound side of I-75, just before the Bass Road exit ramp. A 911 call initially reported that a man had walked into traffic, prompting deputies to respond.
“The sheriff’s office is ruling it as an accident,” Coroner Leon Jones told The Telegraph.
Before deputies could arrive on scene, another 911 call came in from a Garden City woman who had been driving an 18-wheeler northbound. She told dispatchers that a man entered her lane and she may have hit him, according to the coroner’s report.
Search and Discovery in Nearby Ditch
Deputies searched the area for approximately 30 minutes before locating Lucree’s body in a ditch along the interstate, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Richard Robinson.
The sheriff’s office has not indicated why Lucree may have been walking on the highway at that hour. No vehicle associated with him was found nearby.
“We don’t know why he was there, but it’s a tragic situation,” said a sheriff’s office spokesperson.
No Charges Filed; Investigation Ongoing
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed against the truck driver, and the incident is being handled as a fatal accident pending further investigation.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact them at 478-751-7500.
