One Dead, Multiple Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-15 Near Carmel Mountain Ranch

San Diego, CA — A major crash involving four vehicles on southbound Interstate 15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch on Sunday morning led to significant traffic delays, a temporary lane closure, and the death of at least one person, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Crash Unfolds in Carpool Lane Near Camino del Norte

The collision was reported just before 9 a.m. near Camino del Norte. According to CHP, the incident initially involved three vehicles in the carpool lane. A fourth vehicle then collided with one of the disabled cars, intensifying the crash’s severity.

CHP officials said, “One person was pronounced dead at the scene.” However, it’s unclear if that person is included in the total number of injured, which authorities estimate could be as many as nine.

Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the complexity of the multi-vehicle scene caused delays in clearing the roadway.

Traffic Shut Down for Hours

As a result of the crash, the carpool lane near Carmel Mountain Road was closed from 9 a.m. to around noon, causing heavy traffic congestion in the area. Drivers traveling southbound on I-15 experienced extended delays as investigators processed the scene and crews removed the vehicles.

The lane was reopened around midday, but traffic remained sluggish into the early afternoon.

Victims’ Identities Not Yet Released

Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased individual, nor have they confirmed the conditions of the others who were reportedly injured. The identities of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family members.

As of now, the CHP has not indicated whether drugs, alcohol, or speed played a role in the collision. They have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact investigators with information.

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officers are working to determine how the initial accident occurred and what led to the subsequent impact from the fourth vehicle.

With a growing number of traffic incidents reported in the San Diego area recently, law enforcement continues to remind drivers to stay alert, maintain safe distances, and avoid distractions — especially in high-speed zones like the I-15 corridor.
