Houston, Texas – Police in Houston are searching for two teenage suspects after a woman riding a city bus was shot in the head and killed Wednesday in what authorities believe was a case of mistaken identity. Another passenger was also wounded during the shooting, officials said.
Shooting Occurred Aboard METRO Bus
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, known as METRO, said a man boarded the bus and opened fire, targeting two men who were also passengers. Instead, the gunfire struck a 25-year-old woman who was not involved.
METRO Police Chief Ban Tien said the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Teen Passenger Also Injured
Houston police said a 16-year-old male later arrived at a local hospital reporting that he had been wounded in the shooting. Authorities have not released details about his condition.
Investigators believe the suspects involved in the attack are between 16 and 18 years old. Police released photos of the suspects on social media as part of their effort to identify and locate them.
Immediate Response and Investigation
According to METRO officials, the bus operator immediately stopped the vehicle and followed emergency protocol, safely evacuating all remaining passengers.
Police and METRO officers quickly flooded the area searching for the shooter, and members of the public were urged to avoid the scene as the investigation unfolded.
Surveillance footage from inside the bus has been turned over to detectives, and investigators are also reviewing witness statements provided by passengers who were on board at the time.
Witness Describes Chaos Inside Bus
One man who was riding the bus told a local television station that he believes the male passenger who was injured was shot in the leg.
“It was only two shots,” the witness said.
Authorities have not released the name of the woman who was killed, pending notification of her family. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue searching for the suspects and reviewing evidence gathered from the scene.
