Brooklyn, New York – Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital after police say a knife-wielding man barricaded himself inside a patient room and threatened staff before being fatally shot by officers. Details of the incident were confirmed by the NYPD and first reported by Fox News Digital.
Police Respond to Reports of Violent Man Inside Hospital
According to NYPD Brooklyn South Commanding Officer Assistant Chief Charles Minch, officers responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. reporting a violent individual armed with a knife inside the hospital.
Police say the suspect barricaded himself inside a room on the eighth floor, holding an elderly patient and a hospital security guard against their will. Minch said the man threatened to kill hospital staff and had already injured himself while attempting to cut others.
“This incident demonstrates the incredibly dangerous situation that our officers encounter every single day,” Minch said during a news conference, adding that information remains preliminary.
Officers Attempted De-Escalation Before Shooting
Minch stated that responding officers encountered blood throughout the room and surrounding hallway. Officers issued multiple verbal commands instructing the suspect to drop the knife.
Police attempted to subdue the man using Tasers several times, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
When the suspect allegedly advanced toward officers while holding the knife, police discharged their firearms, striking him. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
Suspect Identity Withheld as Investigation Continues
The suspect’s identity has not been released. Police confirmed the knife was recovered at the scene and that the entire incident was recorded on officers’ body-worn cameras.
A law enforcement source said hospital security initially called for police assistance after the suspect was discovered armed with a knife inside the building.
NYPD Issues Traffic Advisory Near Hospital
During the investigation, the NYPD posted an alert on X urging the public to avoid the area surrounding 6th Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn.
“Expect delays and heavy traffic in the surrounding area,” the department stated.
The hospital declined to comment further and directed all media inquiries to the NYPD.
Investigation Ongoing
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved fatalities. Officials say more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
