Putnam County, IN – A routine Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection led to a major drug bust in Putnam County, where Indiana State Police discovered an estimated $7 million worth of cocaine hidden in a semi-truck, authorities say. The seizure underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to interdict dangerous narcotics entering Indiana communities.

Routine Stop Turns Into Major Drug Discovery

According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, when a trooper stopped a blue International semi tractor-trailer traveling on Interstate 70 for a standard DOT inspection. The truck was en route from Joplin, Missouri, to Richmond, Indiana.

While conducting the inspection, officers noted criminal indicators that prompted a K-9 search of the vehicle. During the search, troopers discovered 309 pounds of cocaine hidden in the sleeper area of the truck. Authorities estimate the street value of the narcotics at $7 million.

Suspects Arrested and Charged

Two men from California, 25-year-old Gurpreet Singh and 30-year-old Jasveer Singh, were arrested at the scene. Both were transported to the Putnam County Jail and face preliminary charges of dealing narcotics, classified as a Level 2 felony. Additionally, ICE deportation holds were placed on each suspect, according to ISP.

Authorities emphasized that this bust is part of a larger, ongoing effort to prevent illegal drugs from entering the state and harming Hoosier communities.

Governor Praises Law Enforcement Efforts

Indiana Governor Mike Braun lauded the ISP for the seizure, highlighting the state’s commitment to combatting drug trafficking.

“Indiana has zero tolerance for drug traffickers,” Governor Braun said. “Through coordinated efforts with federal and local partners, the Indiana State Police are proactively stopping dangerous drugs from entering our communities and harming Hoosier families. I made public safety a priority for my administration on day one, and I commend our State Troopers for their hard work keeping Hoosiers safe.”

The governor’s statement underscores the administration’s dedication to reducing crime and protecting communities through proactive policing and inter-agency collaboration.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

The Indiana State Police emphasized that the bust is part of ongoing initiatives to intercept narcotics being transported through the state.

“At the outset of his Administration, Governor Braun emphasized the importance of combatting crime and making our communities safe,” ISP stated. “Through the efforts of the Indiana State Police and their partners, positive results are occurring through significant seizures and dismantling large-scale drug organizations.”

Authorities continue to investigate the origins of the narcotics and the broader trafficking network involved in the shipment.

Community Impact

The seizure of over 300 pounds of cocaine represents a significant victory for law enforcement and the local community, preventing potentially deadly drugs from reaching Indiana neighborhoods. Officials encourage residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity that may be related to drug trafficking.

What more can be done to prevent illegal drugs from entering our communities? How can residents and law enforcement work together to combat large-scale trafficking operations?
