Clovis, NM – Authorities in Clovis are investigating a fatal crash that occurred during the early hours of January 1, following a police pursuit involving a high-speed vehicle fleeing city officers. The incident left one person dead and another hospitalized, prompting an ongoing investigation by local law enforcement.
Police Pursuit Begins in Clovis
According to the Clovis Police Department, officers attempted to stop a Ford Mustang just before 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 1. The vehicle reportedly failed to stop and fled the city at high speed, heading into rural areas of Curry County.
Officers eventually terminated the pursuit after losing sight of the Mustang, citing safety concerns for the public and law enforcement personnel.
Vehicle Found Rolled Over in Rural Area
As officers conducted a search of the surrounding area, they discovered the Mustang had rolled over in a field near County Road 7 and Curry Road G.
Authorities reported that the driver, Julian Romo, was located at the crash scene. A passenger, Jesus Romo, was found unconscious in a nearby field. Both individuals were immediately transported to a hospital for treatment.
Passenger Dies from Injuries
Tragically, Jesus Romo succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while officials said Julian Romo survived and remains under investigation. Police have not released further details about the nature of the injuries sustained by Julian or his current condition.

The Clovis Police Department stated that the incident is still under investigation. Officials are reviewing the circumstances of the pursuit, the cause of the crash, and the sequence of events leading to the vehicle leaving the roadway and rolling over.
