Indianapolis, IN – A semi-truck crash caused significant disruption on the near east side of Indianapolis Monday night after a tractor-trailer became wedged beneath an overpass bridge, damaging both the vehicle and the structure. Crash Reported Near South Rural Street and Moore Avenue
Police say the crash took place at an overpass bridge near the intersection of South Rural Street and Moore Avenue, an area frequently traveled by commercial and local traffic. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a semi-truck lodged under the bridge, unable to move due to the height restriction.
Officials confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the semi driver was traveling southbound on Rural Street at the time of the crash. As the truck attempted to pass beneath the overpass, the top of the semi and its trailer struck the underside of the bridge, causing the vehicle to become stuck.
Clearance Sign Clearly Posted on Overpass
Authorities noted that the overpass had a clearly marked clearance sign indicating a maximum height of 10 feet, 3 inches. Investigators believe the semi exceeded that height, leading to the collision.
Low-clearance bridge crashes are a recurring issue in urban areas like Indianapolis, particularly when large commercial vehicles travel on routes not designed for tall trucks. Police emphasized that signage was visible and properly displayed at the location.
