Lebec, CA – A tragic Christmas Day collision on Interstate 5 in northern Los Angeles County claimed the lives of two children and led to the arrest of a driver on serious criminal charges, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The devastating crash unfolded amid dangerous weather conditions, underscoring the risks of holiday travel during winter storms.
Deadly Crash Reported on Christmas Afternoon
Authorities said the multi-vehicle collision was reported at approximately 2:56 p.m. on Thursday, December 25, along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just south of Vista Del Lago Road in Lebec, California. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a major crash involving multiple vehicles and several occupants, including children.
According to CHP investigators, a gold Toyota RAV4 was stopped in the center median of the freeway while its occupants waited with a family member. Moments later, the stationary vehicle was struck from behind by a blue Nissan Rogue traveling northbound on I-5.
Nissan Rogue Carrying Eight People
Officials confirmed that the Nissan Rogue was occupied by two adults and six minors at the time of the collision. For reasons that remain under investigation, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the median and violently crash into the rear of the stopped Toyota.

The force of the impact was severe. CHP officials stated that three minors were ejected from the Nissan during the crash, a factor that significantly increased the severity of injuries sustained.
Two Children Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Despite rapid response and lifesaving efforts by first responders, two of the ejected minors were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the ages or identities of the victims, citing the ongoing investigation and the need to notify family members.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly given the timing of the crash on a day typically reserved for celebration and family gatherings.
Driver Arrested on Felony Charges
The driver of the Nissan Rogue was identified by CHP as Jorge Preciado. Following the investigation at the scene, Preciado was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment. He was later booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station in Santa Clarita, officials confirmed.
No additional charges were immediately announced, and authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing. CHP has not yet clarified whether alcohol, drugs, speed, or restraint use played a role in the collision.
CHP Emphasizes Importance of Child Safety Seats
In a statement released after the crash, CHP Captain Purvis expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
“Today’s loss of two young lives is heartbreaking,” Captain Purvis said. “Our thoughts are with the families of those involved in this tragedy. This is an important reminder that child safety seats are of utmost importance in providing safety on the roadway.”
Officials noted that proper use of child safety seats and seat belts can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death, particularly during high-impact crashes.
Winter Storm Created Hazardous Driving Conditions
The fatal collision occurred as a winter storm system moved through Southern California, bringing heavy rain, reduced visibility, and slick roadways to parts of northern Los Angeles County. CHP officials warned that such conditions can drastically increase the likelihood of crashes, especially on high-speed freeways like Interstate 5.
Drivers were urged to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather events.
Investigation Ongoing
CHP investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including vehicle speeds, driver actions, and safety restraint use. Authorities have not yet determined whether additional factors contributed to the deadly incident.
As the investigation proceeds, officials say more information may be released in the coming days.
