Titusville, FL – Southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were brought to a standstill on Christmas morning in Brevard County after Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers stopped a reckless driver, leading to a dramatic law enforcement response, a vehicle crash, and multiple arrests, authorities confirmed.
The incident caused a significant traffic disruption between Titusville and Mims, with motorists experiencing delays for nearly two hours before traffic was fully restored.
Reckless Driving Leads to Law Enforcement Pursuit
According to a statement released by an FHP spokesperson, troopers initiated a pursuit after spotting a 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class traveling recklessly in the southbound lanes of I-95. Officials did not immediately specify the exact driving behavior, but emphasized that the manner of operation posed a serious risk to other motorists during a busy holiday travel period.
As the pursuit continued, an FHP trooper executed a PIT maneuver—a tactical method used by law enforcement to safely disable a fleeing vehicle. The maneuver resulted in both the Mercedes-Benz and the trooper’s patrol vehicle leaving the roadway and striking a guardrail, authorities said.
Trooper Hospitalized Following Crash
The collision sent the responding trooper to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. According to FHP, the trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated as a precaution. No further details regarding the trooper’s condition were released, but officials confirmed the injuries were not considered serious.
No additional civilian injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Driver and Passenger Taken Into Custody
Following the crash, law enforcement officers took both the driver and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz into custody at the scene. Authorities revealed that the passenger had a confirmed active warrant out of Broward County, which contributed to the immediate arrest.
Officials did not release the names or ages of those involved, nor did they specify the exact charges that may be filed against the driver at this time. FHP indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional information could be released as the case develops.
I-95 Shutdown Causes Major Holiday Delays
Due to the seriousness of the incident and the need to secure the area, southbound I-95 was completely shut down between Titusville and Mims. Traffic backups quickly formed as holiday travelers were forced to stop or seek alternate routes.
The shutdown remained in effect for approximately two hours, with traffic finally beginning to move again around 1:20 p.m., according to traffic observations and law enforcement updates.
Motorists traveling through the area were advised to remain patient, reduce speed, and follow directions from emergency personnel while the scene was cleared and investigated.
FHP Investigation Continues
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident remains under active investigation. Troopers are reviewing pursuit details, vehicle damage, and other evidence to determine the full sequence of events and whether additional charges will be filed.
FHP officials also used the incident to remind drivers about the dangers of reckless driving, especially during major holidays when roadways are heavily traveled and families are heading to celebrations.
Authorities emphasized that reckless driving not only endangers the driver but also places law enforcement officers and innocent motorists at serious risk.
Law enforcement agencies across Florida continue to urge drivers to slow down, obey traffic laws, and make responsible decisions behind the wheel—particularly during holiday periods like Christmas, when traffic volumes increase significantly.
