Rampaging Deer Damages Cars, Homes, and Fences During Three-Day Incident on Long Island

Lake Ronkonkoma, New York – A normally quiet suburban Long Island neighborhood was thrown into chaos after a white-tailed deer went on what residents described as a “crazy” three-day rampage, slamming into cars, fences, decks, and even knocking on a woman’s front door, leaving neighbors shaken and authorities scrambling.

The bizarre series of events unfolded in Lake Ronkonkoma, where residents say the aggressive deer first appeared on Saturday night, behaving erratically and causing widespread property damage before ultimately being found dead days later.

Deer Runs Amok Through Residential Streets

According to residents, the deer tore through the neighborhood at all hours, seemingly unfazed by police presence or attempts to contain it.

“It ran all over the place for days,” said Tom, a local resident who asked that his last name be withheld. “It smashed right into my neighbor’s pickup truck, ran up another neighbor’s deck, and slammed into fences and poles.”

Several homeowners reported dents in vehicles, damaged fencing, and broken yard structures as the deer charged through properties with alarming force.

Neighbors said the animal appeared disoriented, aggressive, and relentless — behavior that raised concerns about public safety and the deer’s own wellbeing.

Authorities Attempt Capture, Deer Escapes

On Sunday, the situation escalated when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Suffolk County Police Department attempted to capture the animal.

Patricia Mudaro, whose lawn became the deer’s temporary resting spot, said the animal initially appeared calm.

“He was just laying there,” Mudaro explained. “But once the police officer tried to approach it, he suddenly got up and went on a rampage.”

Residents watched as officers chased the deer up and down the block. Witnesses said it repeatedly slammed into brick walls, fences, and poles, narrowly avoiding people as it fled.

Despite the coordinated effort, the deer managed to escape Sunday afternoon, disappearing into the neighborhood and prolonging residents’ anxiety.

Pickup Truck Rammed, Residents Feel Helpless

One homeowner recalled watching helplessly as the deer charged directly into his parked pickup truck, leaving a noticeable dent before darting off again.

“You just stand there and watch,” the neighbor said. “There’s nothing you can do when something like that happens so fast.”

Residents described feeling trapped in their own homes, unsure when or where the deer might reappear.

Deer Returns and Knocks on Front Door

Just when neighbors thought the ordeal was over, the deer returned the very next night.

At around 9 p.m., the animal slammed into Patricia Mudaro’s front door, prompting her to call police in fear.

“I thought my house was being broken into,” Mudaro said. “I was terrified.”

Police responded quickly, triggering another chaotic chase — this time through a nearby strip mall along Portion Road.

Strip Mall Chase Leaves Workers Stunned

Late-night employees at a local smoke shop watched in disbelief as officers pursued the deer through the parking lot.

“I thought I was tripping,” joked J.R., an employee at Happy Daze, recalling the surreal scene of three or four officers on foot chasing a deer under bright parking lot lights.

Officers eventually managed to get a rope-like device around the animal’s neck, guiding it toward the side of Portion Road.

Authorities later confirmed the deer was eventually found dead, though the exact cause was not publicly detailed.

While no serious injuries were reported, residents say the incident has left them unsettled and asking questions about wildlife safety, animal distress, and how similar situations should be handled in suburban areas.

Should communities have better response plans for aggressive wildlife incidents? And how can residents stay safe when animals behave unpredictably? Share your thoughts in the comments below — have you ever experienced something like this in your neighborhood?
