Phoenix, Arizona – Residents in the Phoenix metropolitan area should prepare for a shift in weather conditions this week, as forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS) predict a more active weather pattern leading up to and during the Christmas holiday.
Officials say the upcoming system will bring rainfall, cooler temperatures, and potential travel impacts, although snow will be limited to the region’s highest elevations.
Two Rounds of Rain Expected
According to the NWS Phoenix office, a weather system approaching the Southwest midweek is expected to increase moisture and elevate chances of precipitation across the region.
“At this time, two rounds of precipitation are likely late Tuesday through Thursday,” the NWS forecast stated, signaling a potentially wetter holiday period than Phoenix residents may be accustomed to.
Light Showers Tuesday Into Wednesday
Officials indicate that the first round of precipitation could bring light showers starting late Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, primarily affecting the Valley and surrounding areas.
A second, more widespread area of rainfall is expected Wednesday through Thursday, which may have a more pronounced effect on regional travel, particularly for those driving to or from southern California during the holiday season.
Temperatures Remain Mild
Despite the wetter conditions, temperatures are expected to remain mild for late December, with highs in the low to mid-70s.
- Wednesday: Highs between 73°F and 76°F
- Thursday: Highs between 71°F and 74°F
Officials noted that these temperatures are typical for the Valley during December, but the added precipitation may create slick roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Snow Limited to Highest Elevations
For residents traveling to higher terrain, snowfall is expected only above 9,000 to 10,000 feet, according to the NWS. Lower elevations are not anticipated to see snow, but mountain travel may still be affected.
Forecasters emphasized that while the Valley will mainly experience rain, mountain passes and northern Arizona highways could be impacted by snow or icy conditions.
Continuing Rain Chances Into Weekend and Next Week
Additional moisture is anticipated through the weekend and into early next week, potentially bringing further showers and unsettled weather as 2025 draws to a close.
Meteorologists encourage residents to monitor forecasts closely, especially if traveling during the holiday period. The NWS advises allowing extra travel time and staying alert for changing conditions.
Travel and Safety Advisory
Officials recommend that drivers:
- Plan ahead for holiday travel, accounting for possible rain and delays
- Drive cautiously on wet roads and allow extra stopping distance
- Check mountain routes for snow or ice if heading to higher elevations
- Stay updated on the latest advisories via the NWS website or local alerts
