Fraser, Michigan – A violent, multi-vehicle crash in Macomb County claimed one life and left several others injured after a driver lost control, struck multiple objects, and ultimately crashed into a SMART bus, according to authorities in Fraser.
The incident unfolded during the early evening commute, causing chaos at a busy intersection and prompting a large emergency response from police and fire crews.
Chain-Reaction Crash Unfolds at Busy Intersection
The crash occurred at approximately 5:29 p.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025, in the area of Garfield Road and Mulvey Road in Fraser, police said.
According to the Fraser Department of Public Safety, the incident began on Mulvey Road, where a driver collided with another vehicle under circumstances that remain under investigation.
That initial impact caused the first driver’s vehicle to veer off the roadway, where it then struck a light pole, intensifying the severity of the crash.
Vehicle Slams Into SMART Bus, Catches Fire
After hitting the light pole, the same vehicle continued into southbound Garfield Road, where it crashed directly into a SMART bus, police confirmed.
The collision caused the car to become entangled with the bus, and moments later, the vehicle caught fire, creating a dangerous and rapidly evolving emergency scene.
Fraser police officers were among the first to arrive and acted quickly to extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further or causing additional injuries.
Driver Killed at Scene, Officials Confirm
Despite the rapid response, officers discovered that the driver of the car had died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity, age, or gender of the deceased driver, pending notification of next of kin.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as crash reconstruction teams work to determine the exact cause of the deadly sequence of events.
Bus Driver and Passengers Injured
The driver of the SMART bus, along with two passengers, were assisted off the bus by bystanders in the moments following the crash.
Authorities said the passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The bus driver, however, was also transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, though injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Officials praised the actions of civilians who helped passengers safely exit the bus before emergency crews fully secured the area.
Additional Victims From First Collision Treated
After learning more about the initial collision on Mulvey Road, officers spoke with the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the first crash.
That vehicle sustained noticeable damage, and police said several occupants suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, none of them required ambulance transport or hospitalization.
Cause of Crash Under Active Investigation
Fraser police said they are continuing to investigate what led to the initial crash and whether speed, distraction, medical issues, or other factors may have contributed.
No additional details regarding impairment or charges have been released at this time. Officials noted that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and ensure the safety of motorists and first responders.
