Baltimore, MD – A Baltimore County dentist has been sentenced to serve just one day of a 10-year prison term for illegally distributing narcotics and controlled dangerous substances, authorities announced.
Illegal Distribution Outside Professional Capacity
Dr. Andrew T. Fried, DMD, formerly the owner of Perry Hall Family Dental in Nottingham, was accused of purchasing Oxycodone from a former dental assistant between April 2022 and May 2025. Prosecutors stated that the two allegedly shared the drugs between themselves, a violation of federal and state drug laws.
Oxycodone is classified as a Schedule II-Controlled Substance by the FDA due to its high potential for addiction and serious health risks, including overdose and death.
Court Orders Probation and Healthcare Restrictions
While Judge Andrew Battista imposed a 10-year sentence, Dr. Fried is required to serve only one day in jail. In addition, he will undergo three years of probation and is barred from participating in federal healthcare programs, preventing him from practicing in certain professional capacities.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown highlighted the importance of patient safety, stating:
“Every Marylander who sits in a dental chair should trust that they’re receiving competent, professional care. This sentence protects Dr. Fried’s patients from further unsafe treatment and eliminates a source of opioids in our communities.”
Implications for Public Safety
Authorities emphasized that the case serves as a reminder of the dangers of prescription drug diversion, particularly in healthcare settings. By removing Dr. Fried’s access to federal programs and monitoring his probation, the court aims to prevent further illegal distribution of opioids.
The case underscores ongoing concerns about the role of healthcare providers in the opioid crisis and the need for vigilance in safeguarding patient trust and community health.
Do you believe the one-day jail sentence is sufficient for illegally distributing opioids? Should stricter penalties be applied to healthcare professionals who misuse prescription drugs?
