Pacoima, California – A deadly overnight crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Pacoima claimed the life of a motorist early Tuesday morning, triggering a massive emergency response and forcing the closure of multiple freeway lanes, authorities confirmed.
Deadly Two-Vehicle Collision Reported Before Dawn
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway at Osborne Street, near the busy interchange with the 170 Freeway. Officials said the crash involved two vehicles, though details surrounding how the collision unfolded remain under investigation.
A CHP spokesperson confirmed that the impact caused one of the vehicles to burst into flames, creating a dangerous and chaotic scene for first responders arriving at the location.
Driver Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Authorities stated that the driver of the vehicle that caught fire was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the severity of the crash and the resulting fire, officials have not yet released the identity, age, or gender of the deceased motorist.
As of the latest update, it remains unclear whether the second driver involved in the crash suffered injuries. CHP officials said additional information will be released once next-of-kin notifications are completed and the investigation progresses.
Video Shows Debris and Heavy Investigation Effort
Video captured shows the devastating aftermath of the crash, with charred debris scattered across multiple lanes of the freeway. Investigators could be seen meticulously examining the scene as traffic backed up for miles during the early morning commute.
Multiple CHP units and emergency crews remained on scene for several hours, working to document evidence, clear wreckage, and ensure the safety of motorists in the area.
SigAlert Issued as All Lanes Shut Down
Following the crash, CHP issued a SigAlert for the northbound 5 Freeway at the 170 Freeway, confirming that all lanes were temporarily shut down due to the severity of the incident.
Approximately one hour after the crash, officials reported that the transition road from the northbound 170 Freeway to the northbound 5 Freeway remained completely blocked. In addition, the #2, #3, and #4 lanes of the northbound 5 were still closed as cleanup and investigative efforts continued.
These closures caused significant traffic delays for early morning commuters traveling through Pacoima and surrounding areas of the San Fernando Valley.
CHP Urges Drivers to Use Caution
In a public statement, CHP officials urged motorists to exercise patience and caution while traveling near the area.
“Please drive with caution if traveling through this area,” CHP officials said. “Thank you for your patience.”
Drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for emergency vehicles and lane closures during the morning hours.
Investigation Into Cause of Crash Ongoing
The cause of the collision has not yet been determined. Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage, vehicle damage, and witness statements to determine whether speed, impairment, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.
Authorities also reminded drivers of the importance of staying vigilant on freeways during overnight and early morning hours, when visibility may be reduced and fatigue can play a role in serious collisions.
