Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends in Crash on Highway 17, One Arrested in Charleston County

Charleston County, SC – A stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a crash Friday afternoon on Highway 17 near Six Mile Road, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities confirmed that one person was arrested, though no name or specific charges have been released.

Pursuit Initiated, Then Halted

Deputies learned about a possible stolen vehicle traveling on Highway 17 north of Mount Pleasant. A pursuit was initiated but later called off due to high traffic conditions, according to Sheriff’s office spokesman Mark Ruppel.

The agency’s helicopter continued to track the vehicle, relaying its location to Mount Pleasant Police. While under aerial observation, the stolen vehicle crashed into another car on Highway 17 near Six Mile Road.

Detentions and Hospital Evaluation

Three people were detained in the vehicle, initially believed to all be involved in the theft. Two of them were later released, while deputies determined the third had outstanding warrants in multiple jurisdictions and was taken into custody.

All three individuals, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, were transported by EMS to a local hospital for evaluation. Authorities reported that the driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

Highway Reopened

The crash initially prompted lane closures on Highway 17, but all lanes have since reopened, allowing traffic to resume. Investigators continue to review the incident and confirm the details of the arrested suspect and potential charges.

Law Enforcement Statement

Deputies emphasized the importance of air support in tracking stolen vehicles safely and cautioned drivers to stay alert and avoid risky behavior during pursuits.

Should law enforcement continue using helicopters to track stolen vehicles when ground pursuits are too dangerous? How do you feel about the risks of high-speed chases on busy highways?
