New York City, NY – Two NYPD officers were injured early Tuesday morning when a hit-and-run driver backed into them during a traffic stop in Gravesend, Brooklyn, authorities reported. The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Anas Rao of Flatlands, was arrested hours after the incident.
Traffic Stop Turns Dangerous
Police said the incident began around 4:40 a.m. at West 8th Street and Quentin Road, when Rao allegedly ran a steady red light in his gray Mercedes C300. Officers pulled him over and exited their patrol car to approach the vehicle.
Instead of complying, the driver reversed his car into the officers before fleeing the scene, according to police sources.
Officers Treated at Hospital
Both officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. One sustained minor leg injuries, while the other suffered injuries to his foot. Police confirmed that neither injury appeared life-threatening.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Authorities apprehended Anas Rao later that day. According to the NYPD, he faces multiple charges, including:
- Two counts of assault
- Two counts of reckless endangerment
- Possession of a forged instrument
- Vehicular assault
- Two counts of obstruction of governmental administration
Police also noted that this was Rao’s first arrest.

The NYPD continues to investigate the circumstances of the hit-and-run, including the events leading up to the traffic stop and the suspect’s actions during the incident.
