Carjacking Escalates Into 70-MPH Chase From San Antonio to Universal City; Suspect Hospitalized after Crash

San Antonio, TX – A suspected carjacking in San Antonio escalated into a high-speed chase that stretched into Universal City, ending with the suspect crashing his vehicle and being hospitalized, authorities reported.

The incident began near the intersection of WW White and East Houston Street, where a witness initially called police to report a shoplifting, which quickly escalated into a violent encounter.

Suspect Allegedly Assaults Victim During Carjacking

According to the San Antonio Police Department, the witness observed the suspect assaulting the victim, punching and pushing the victim into the passenger seat of a vehicle. The suspect then drove off with the victim inside but eventually dropped her off at a second location before fleeing again.

During the incident, the victim reportedly attempted to exit the vehicle but was prevented from doing so by the suspect.

High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash

Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ethan Scott Thomas, failed to stop, leading to a chase that reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour, according to a witness.

The pursuit ended near Aviation and FM 1976 when Thomas lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a tree and boulder. Officers on the scene tackled him, and he was subsequently transported to a hospital.

A witness described the dramatic conclusion:

“I saw the police chasing the red car… he started to lose some control. He went into a tree and then into a boulder… and they tackled him.”

Suspect Found with Drugs, Warrants

Police said that at the time of his arrest, Thomas had a parole violation, marijuana, and other narcotics in his possession. He also had an active warrant for his arrest.

He is charged with:

  • Possession of narcotics/marijuana
  • Evading arrest
  • Unauthorized use of a vehicle
  • Being a wanted person

Authorities have not released information regarding the condition of the woman involved or whether she sustained any injuries.

Police Response and Investigation

San Antonio police continue to investigate the circumstances of the carjacking and subsequent chase. Officials emphasized the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement and the risks posed to the public during high-speed pursuits.

Community Awareness

Residents in the San Antonio and Universal City areas are urged to report suspicious activity and remain vigilant, particularly in areas near busy intersections where such incidents have occurred.
