Grant-Valkaria, FL – A tragic late-night crash along U.S. 1 in Grant-Valkaria, Florida, left one person dead and another injured after a single-vehicle SUV rollover, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The collision occurred late Saturday night, prompting an emergency response and a full investigation into what caused the vehicle to lose control.
Crash Occurred Around 11:30 p.m. on U.S. 1
According to FHP, troopers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a Hyundai Tucson traveling northbound on U.S. 1, just south of Valkaria Road.
Investigators said the SUV was in the outside northbound lane when it suddenly veered left for reasons that remain unclear. The vehicle then struck a raised curbed median, triggering a sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
SUV Lost Control After Striking Median
The FHP crash report states that after hitting the median, the Hyundai Tucson lost its left front tire, making it extremely difficult for the driver to maintain control.
The SUV continued moving northwest across the median, and the driver — a 26-year-old Palm Bay woman — was unable to correct the vehicle’s path or return it to the northbound lanes of U.S. 1.
As the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic, it entered the southbound inside lane, creating a dangerous and chaotic situation on the roadway.
Vehicle Overturned, Passenger Ejected
According to troopers, the SUV then struck a raised grass median, hit a plastic pole, and clipped the edge of the pavement. Following these impacts, the vehicle began to overturn.
During the rollover, the passenger — a 27-year-old Palm Bay man — was ejected from the vehicle. Investigators confirmed the man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while the driver was properly restrained.
Passenger Dies at Hospital, Driver Injured
Emergency crews transported both occupants to a nearby hospital following the crash. Despite medical efforts, the 27-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead, FHP confirmed.
The driver sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved as next-of-kin notifications are still underway.
