Pendleton, IN – A 38-year-old Indiana correctional officer has been arrested on multiple felony charges after allegedly trafficking drugs to an inmate at Pendleton Correctional Facility. Authorities say the method of smuggling involved a condom and a Kraft cheese container, underscoring the lengths individuals may go to bypass prison security.
Investigation Initiated After Tip to IDOC
Ashley S. Smith, 38, was taken into custody this week following an investigation by the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC). Officials began looking into Smith on Monday after receiving a tip that she had smuggled marijuana and Suboxone strips to inmate Jaconiah Fields.
The investigation reportedly included a review of body-worn camera footage, which allegedly confirmed the tip. According to IDOC, the footage showed Smith speaking privately with Fields about a “drop” of contraband.
Contraband Seized During Search
A search of Fields’ unit yielded multiple items allegedly trafficked by Smith:
- A condom filled with 59 grams of marijuana
- 10 N8 Suboxone strips hidden inside a Kraft cheese container
- A plastic jar containing 12 grams of marijuana
Bodycam footage reportedly captured Smith discussing with Fields how she “missed him”, followed by conversation about a “package” and instructions for repackaging the drugs before leaving them near Fields’ bed area.
Admission of Inappropriate Relationship
Smith was interviewed by investigators on Tuesday, during which she allegedly admitted to having an “inappropriate relationship” with Fields while serving as a correctional officer. When asked if she had done anything else, Smith reportedly paused in silence before acknowledging that she had trafficked drugs. Court documents indicate that she then refused to provide further details.
Felony Charges Filed
Following the investigation, Smith was formally charged with multiple felonies:
- Dealing Schedule III drugs in a penal facility – Level 5 Felony
- Trafficking with an Inmate – Level 5 Felony
- Dealing in Marijuana over 30 grams – Level 6 Felony
- Official Misconduct by a Public Servant – Level 6 Felony
Online jail records show Smith is being held on a $1,000 bond. An initial hearing in Madison Circuit Court 3 was conducted on Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators are reviewing how Smith was able to bring contraband into the facility and whether additional security measures need to be implemented.
Smith’s case will proceed through Madison County courts, where prosecutors will present evidence including bodycam footage, confiscated drugs, and statements made during interviews. Conviction on any of the felonies could result in significant prison time.
