Teaneck, NJ – A 22-year-old man from Fort Lee is fighting for his life after a car struck the e-bike he was riding near an entrance to the New Jersey Turnpike in Teaneck on Monday evening. Officials say the man sustained severe injuries in the crash, which occurred near a major traffic ramp feeding into Interstate 95 South.
E-Bike Rider Found Unconscious After Impact
According to Teaneck Police Chief Andrew R. McGurr, the collision took place around 6:30 p.m. on Degraw Avenue, close to the I-95 South on-ramp. Officers arriving at the scene discovered the e-bike rider breathing but unconscious, showing signs of significant trauma.
Police immediately began administering life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. Paramedics transported the injured man to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
Driver Stayed at the Scene and Cooperated
Authorities identified the driver as a 20-year-old woman from Teaneck. She was not injured in the crash and, according to police, stayed on scene, cooperated fully with investigators, and provided a statement.
Chief McGurr added that a witness also stayed at the location and assisted officers by helping direct and block traffic while emergency responders worked.
Preliminary Findings Point to Sudden Road Entry
Early investigative details suggest the e-bike rider had been traveling eastbound along the center median of Degraw Avenue. Police say he then abruptly entered the roadway in an attempt to cross the eastbound lanes, at which point he was struck by the vehicle.
At this stage, detectives have not announced any contributing factors such as speed, lighting conditions, or potential impairment. Officials emphasized that the findings are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.
No Charges Filed Yet
As of Tuesday morning, police reported that no charges had been filed against the driver. Investigators are continuing to review witness statements, roadway evidence, and other factors to determine fault or potential violations.
The incident occurred in a busy area near one of the region’s major highways, where heavy traffic, merging lanes, and limited visibility can create dangerous conditions—particularly for cyclists and e-bike riders.
Ongoing Investigation
The Teaneck Police Department is continuing its full investigation into the collision. Authorities have not released the identity of the injured rider or the driver, pending further updates. Officials have not indicated when additional information may become available, but they are urging anyone with knowledge of the crash to come forward.
As e-bike usage continues to rise across North Jersey, incidents like this highlight the need for increased awareness from both cyclists and drivers—especially near high-traffic areas such as Turnpike ramps and multi-lane intersections.
