Florida Sheriff Arrests 8 Teen Football Players Accused of Stealing $2,000 in Merchandise Hours Before Championship Game

POLK COUNTY, FL — A weekend youth football tournament turned into a criminal investigation after eight teenage players from Pennsylvania were arrested for allegedly stealing more than $2,000 worth of sporting goods equipment just hours before their championship matchup.

The arrests, announced by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, have stunned parents, coaches, and tournament organizers who expected a celebration of young athletes — not a criminal case involving retail theft and conspiracy.

Tournament Trip Takes an Unexpected Turn

The teens, all members of the United Thoroughbreds youth football team based in Philadelphia, had traveled to Florida to compete in the Prolifix Nationals tournament held on Dec. 7. According to investigators, instead of spending the hours leading up to their game preparing, the boys allegedly traveled by Uber to a Dick’s Sporting Goods store located at nearby Posner Park.

Sheriff Grady Judd said 47 items were stolen during the incident, including football gloves, hoodies, lip guards, cotton underwear, and other athletic gear. The merchandise totaled more than $2,000, according to store loss-prevention staff.

“They came into the store in two groups, and they began to systematically steal product,” Judd said during a Monday press briefing. “They stole and they stole, and they stole.

Surveillance Footage and Staff Reports Lead to Arrests

Authorities say the teens — five 15-year-olds and three 14-year-olds — entered the store separately but used similar tactics. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing the boys removing tags, placing items in bags, or wearing stolen merchandise on their bodies. Loss-prevention staff contacted deputies once the group left the building.

“This wasn’t accidental. This wasn’t impulsive,” Judd said. “It was organized.”

Sheriff’s deputies took the teens into custody and transported them to the Juvenile Assessment Center. Each teen now faces charges of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft, offenses that could follow them well beyond the championship game they never got to play.

Sheriff’s Office and State Officials Speak Out

The arrests sparked immediate responses from state and local leaders, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who reposted the case details on social media, writing, “They picked the wrong state — and the wrong county.”

Sheriff Judd echoed that sentiment during his remarks:

“In Polk County … we lock you up for stealing. We don’t overlook it. We don’t dismiss it. If you steal, you go to jail.”

He sarcastically referred to the teens as the “Thoroughbred Thieves,” a play on their team name.

Authorities noted that none of the players were allowed to participate in Saturday night’s game following the arrests. The United Thoroughbreds ultimately lost the championship matchup 26 to 6.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the case has been forwarded to the Florida State Attorney’s Office for review, where prosecutors will determine how to proceed based on the teens’ ages and criminal histories.

Fallout for the Team and Community

The arrests have drawn strong reactions from parents, community organizers, and youth sports advocates in both Florida and Pennsylvania. Many expressed disappointment and concern that a major out-of-state opportunity — which required travel, fundraising, and team preparation — devolved into criminal activity.

Some parents publicly questioned whether adult supervision was present on the trip, noting that the teens were able to independently call an Uber and travel to a retail store during tournament hours.

Others worried that the incident would tarnish the reputation of the youth program, which has historically been recognized for competitive achievements and mentorship opportunities for inner-city youth.

As the legal process unfolds, coaches and parents are left managing the consequences, including team morale and the potential impact on future tournaments.

Prosecutors Reviewing Possible Outcomes

Legal experts note that while juvenile offenders often receive leniency, courts may consider the deliberate nature of the theft, the dollar amount involved, and the coordinated behavior when determining penalties. Each teen’s case will be evaluated individually.

The sheriff emphasized that the investigation is still active and additional information could surface as prosecutors review statements, surveillance footage, and communication records from the day of the incident.

Youth sports are meant to build discipline, teamwork, and opportunity — but incidents like this raise larger questions about supervision and responsibility. What steps do you think organizations should take to prevent situations like this during team travel? Share your thoughts in the comments.
