OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A tragic discovery inside an Oklahoma City home has led to first-degree murder charges against two parents, after authorities say their 2-year-old daughter was fatally mauled by a malnourished family dog left alone with her for an extended period of time.
The case has shaken the community and raised urgent questions about parental responsibility, animal welfare, and the conditions inside the residence.
The Initial 911 Call and Devastating Scene
Officers were dispatched to the family’s home on Nov. 18 after receiving a report of a child not breathing. When first responders entered the residence, they found Locklynn Rose McGuire, just 2 years old, unresponsive and suffering from “horrific injuries” consistent with an animal attack, according to the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities learned the dog involved was one of four kept inside the home, and that Locklynn had reportedly been attacked by the same dog before, surviving earlier injuries but remaining vulnerable to ongoing danger.
Police say the toddler had been left alone in a room with the dog for a “substantial period of time” before she was found deceased, raising immediate concern about neglect and prior warnings.
Conditions Inside the Home and Animal Welfare Concerns
Oklahoma City Animal Welfare removed all four dogs, including three described as severely malnourished, from the residence. Additionally, two bearded dragons were taken for safety evaluations. Investigators described living conditions that indicated ongoing neglect, both for the children and the animals in the home.
The dogs’ condition played a central role in the decision to escalate charges from second-degree to first-degree murder, as prosecutors alleged that the parents failed to protect Locklynn despite knowing the dog was dangerous.
Upgraded Charges and Legal Consequences
Initially, Darci Lambert, 24, and Jorden McGuire, 34, were charged with second-degree murder. But after reviewing evidence, prosecutors announced upgraded charges, citing the “horrendous details” uncovered during the investigation. The pair now faces:
- One count of first-degree murder
- Two counts of animal cruelty
The district attorney’s office stated that the couple “maliciously failed to protect their child and permitted her to remain in the presence of a dangerous, malnourished dog, fully aware of the serious risk of harm.”
Both parents are being held on $1 million bond and could face life in prison if convicted. Oklahoma law also permits the death penalty in certain first-degree murder cases, though prosecutors have not indicated whether they plan to pursue it.
A Family Mourns a Child Remembered as “Pure Light”
A GoFundMe launched by relatives identified Locklynn as the couple’s daughter. Her family described the toddler as “curious, gentle, and full of joy”, writing that her smile could brighten even the darkest days.
“Losing her in such a heartbreaking and unexpected way has left our entire family shattered,” her cousin wrote. The fundraiser reflects a deep grief shared by extended family and community members who have rallied in support.

Community Questions and Ongoing Investigation
The case has sparked statewide condemnation and renewed concerns about child safety and proper oversight of aggressive or neglected animals in homes with young children. Prosecutors say more details may surface as the investigation continues, including whether previous warnings or red flags were ignored.
Authorities are still determining whether other individuals may face charges, and further analysis of the dogs’ condition is underway to understand how long they had been deprived of adequate care.
