Ormond Beach, Florida — A 36-year-old man involved in a high-speed crash in Volusia County offered deputies an unusual explanation for why he was behind the wheel of a stolen BMW convertible. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the suspect insisted he never stole the vehicle — instead, he claimed he was suddenly “teleported” into it.
Crash Follows Theft at Bicentennial Park
The bizarre incident unfolded on Monday near the intersection of Old Dixie Highway and Plantation Oaks Boulevard, shortly after a BMW was reportedly stolen from Bicentennial Park.
Deputies say the vehicle’s owner had left his BMW unlocked while walking his dog, with the keys hidden inside a closed cupholder. Despite the seemingly concealed location, someone managed to get inside the car and drive off within minutes.
Authorities identified the suspect as Calvin Curtis Johnson, 36.
Witnesses Rescue Driver After High-Speed Wreck
Only a few minutes after the theft, the BMW crashed violently. Witnesses at the scene told investigators they saw the car traveling at extremely high speeds — allegedly over 100 mph — before the driver lost control.
The collision left the vehicle heavily damaged, and passerby rushed to pull the driver from the wreckage. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Johnson survived the crash and was conscious when deputies arrived.
Suspect Claims He “Teleported” Into BMW
When questioned about the crash and the stolen vehicle, Johnson offered a shocking explanation. Deputies say he admitted to speeding but denied stealing the BMW altogether.
According to the sheriff’s report, Johnson claimed he had been “teleported into the car” and did not know how he ended up behind the wheel.
Deputies noted that the story did not align with witness accounts, the evidence at the scene, or Johnson’s own driving behavior prior to the crash.
Charges: Grand Theft & Suspended License

Following medical evaluation, Johnson was transported to a local hospital for treatment of crash-related injuries. Once cleared, deputies say he will be booked into the Volusia County Jail on the following charges:
- Grand theft of a motor vehicle
- Driving with a suspended license
Officials have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Sheriff’s Office Issues Reminder
In a social media post addressing the incident, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office urged residents to take proactive steps to secure their belongings and avoid crimes of opportunity.
The department wrote: “Reminder: Please lock your vehicle while you’re enjoying our parks!”
Deputies emphasize that even a quick walk — like the one the BMW owner took with his dog — can provide ample opportunity for thieves, especially when keys are left in the vehicle.
Community Reacts to Unusual Claim
The suspect’s “teleportation” claim has sparked widespread curiosity and disbelief across the community, particularly as the incident comes amid a rise in opportunistic vehicle thefts across Central Florida.
Investigators continue to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the crash, but they say all signs point to a straightforward case of auto theft — despite the defendant’s extraordinary explanation.
