Dallas, Texas — A family celebration in Dallas turned into tragedy over the weekend when a 33-year-old Houston man was fatally shot while shielding his wife during a gunfire eruption at a baby shower. The incident left one dead and four others injured, and police have now charged a 21-year-old suspect in connection with the violence.
Family Gathering Turns Chaotic After Fight Breaks Out
The shooting occurred Saturday at Verbazend Creations & Event Venue in the Red Bird area of Dallas, where relatives had gathered to celebrate a niece’s baby shower. Among them was Joseph “JoJo” Premeaux, who had traveled from Houston to spend the afternoon with loved ones.
Family members say Premeaux was laughing and enjoying the event just minutes before chaos began. According to witnesses, a group of men arrived at the venue after being invited by another guest. Soon after, a fight broke out inside the building, escalating rapidly into violence.
Video taken at the baby shower captures Premeaux smiling and mingling with relatives, unaware that the celebration would soon turn deadly.
Victim Fatally Shot While Shielding His Wife
During the confrontation, police say five people were shot, including the alleged gunman. Relatives told investigators that as tensions escalated, one of the men pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Premeaux was struck in the heart while trying to protect his wife, a moment witnesses say reflects the type of person he was—selfless and devoted.
Authorities identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Jesus Torres, who was injured during the altercation. Torres was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Dallas County Jail on a murder charge. Police have not released details on what prompted the fight or how the initial dispute began.
Multiple Injuries, One Relative in Critical Condition
Among the victims was Hector, a cousin of the deceased, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Family members say he is currently in a coma at Methodist Dallas Medical Center and remains in critical condition. Loved ones described Hector as “the life of the party” and said his sudden decline has added another layer of heartbreak as the family prays for his recovery.
The other injured individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to survive.
Premeaux’s older brother, Paul Premeaux, said the family is struggling to comprehend the sudden loss. Paul described his brother as someone known for his humor, kindness, and loyalty. He added that their bond remained strong despite living in different cities.
“It just feels unreal,” he said, remembering the brother who always looked up to him.
Family Faces Another Tragedy Weeks Before Christmas
The Premeaux family, who previously lost their oldest brother to suicide, is now preparing to bury another loved one just weeks before Christmas. The emotional toll has been overwhelming, especially as relatives cling to hope for Hector’s recovery while grieving JoJo’s sudden death.
Loved ones say JoJo was a successful plumber, a devoted father of three, and a loving husband. Friends and family described him as someone who brought joy into every room and who had traveled to Dallas simply to celebrate new life within the family.

Police Continue Investigating the Circumstances
Authorities have not released further information on the events leading up to the shooting or whether additional suspects might face charges. Detectives continue to interview witnesses and review video evidence to piece together what sparked the deadly confrontation.
The Dallas Police Department is urging anyone with additional information or video footage to come forward as investigators work to build a complete account of what took place inside the venue that evening.
