According to a Facebook post by the Lawrence Police Department, the pursuit began at approximately 11 a.m. Wednesday when officers received a report of multiple occupants in a stolen vehicle near Wakarusa Drive and Overland Drive, close to Lawrence Free State High School.
The driver initially fled north on Folks Road, then east on Peterson Road, and finally south on Monterey Way. Police deployed spike strips, which successfully punctured one of the Yukon’s tires, yet the driver continued to evade capture.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle missed a left turn on Overland Drive and collided with a pole. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but officers apprehended them quickly and without injury. Other occupants in the stolen vehicle surrendered voluntarily.
Juvenile Taken into Custody
Authorities confirmed that the driver, a 14-year-old reported runaway, was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. A 17-year-old male passenger was transported to a hospital and later released to a parent.
Police reported that the stolen GMC Yukon had been taken from a residence near 24th Street and Louisiana Street on Tuesday, as per the reports.
