Richmond, IN — A Richmond man is behind bars after police followed a trail of footprints in the snow that led officers directly to his location following an armed robbery over the weekend. The unusual but effective tracking method resulted in the arrest of Jamie Ledbetter, who authorities say is connected to two robberies at the same convenience store.
According to the Richmond Police Department (RPD), officers were dispatched to the Village Mart, located at 500 W. Main St., on Saturday at 8:34 p.m., after receiving reports of an armed robbery in progress.
Footprints Point Officers to Suspect’s Home
When officers arrived on scene, they quickly discovered a set of distinct footprints left in the freshly fallen snow. After determining which prints belonged to the suspect, police followed a direct, uninterrupted path, which led them from the store to a residence in the 100 block of Richmond Avenue.
Inside that residence, officers located Jamie Ledbetter, who was immediately detained as detectives obtained and executed a search warrant for the property.
Evidence Links Suspect to Second Robbery
During the search, investigators uncovered evidence tying Ledbetter not only to Saturday night’s crime but also to a previous armed robbery at the same Village Mart on Nov. 18.
The arrest closed both cases swiftly, in what police described as a combination of teamwork, timing, and weather conditions aligning in their favor, as per the reports.
Police Chief Praises Officers’ Persistence—and the Snow
In a statement, RPD Chief Kyle Weatherly praised his department’s work while also acknowledging the unusual break that helped officers track down the suspect.
“If you choose to commit a violent crime in this city, we’re going to find you,” Chief Weatherly said. “Sometimes it takes time, sometimes it takes teamwork, and sometimes, like last night, the snow draws us a map right to you.”
Ledbetter is now facing multiple charges as the investigation continues.
Community Relief After Quick Arrest
Local residents expressed relief after hearing how swiftly the suspect was apprehended—especially given that both robberies targeted the same store within days. Store employees and nearby community members say they hope the arrest brings an end to the string of incidents and restores a sense of safety.
Authorities have not yet released details on the specific charges or whether additional suspects are being sought.
