91-year-old Dies as Honda Flips onto SR-46, Collides with Another Car in Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. – A tragic crash claimed the life of a 91-year-old Daytona Beach Shores man on Monday, after his vehicle struck a guardrail on Interstate 4 and overturned onto State Road 46, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Crash Details

The accident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Monday. A 2008 Honda Accord was traveling east on I-4, approaching the SR-46 overpass, when for reasons still unknown, the vehicle veered off the roadway to the left and struck the median guardrail.

The impact caused the Honda to overturn onto SR-46, colliding with a Mercedes that was stopped in the eastbound left turn lane.

Victims Involved

The Honda driver, a 91-year-old man from Daytona Beach Shores, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes driver, a 21-year-old woman from Sanford, was uninjured and remained on the scene.

FHP Trooper Michael Allen commented on the unusual nature of the crash:

“This is my first airborne crash that I’ve seen. Unfortunately, I’ve had way too many fatalities that I’ve been on scene with. One is way too many. But there’s certainly a lot, a lot to take in and work through here with the vehicle being airborne.”

Scene and Road Closures

Footage of the crash, captured by Trooper Steve, showed the overturned Honda and the damaged Mercedes.

As per ClickOrlando, both directions of the roadway were closed, causing significant delays, but the roads reopened after 3 p.m.

Ongoing Investigation

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. No further details about the circumstances leading to the Honda leaving the roadway have been released.
