Spanish Fork, UT — A tragic multi-vehicle crash involving a truck pulling a horse trailer left one person dead and several others injured on U.S. 6 late Sunday evening, according to local authorities.
The collision caused major traffic disruptions and sparked a large emergency response as investigators worked through the night to clear the scene and assess damages.
Crash Occurs Near Spanish Fork Parkway
The Spanish Fork Police Department reported that the crash occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m. when a westbound truck hauling a horse trailer approached a red light near the intersection with Spanish Fork Parkway. Several vehicles were stopped in the roadway ahead when the truck failed to stop and collided into multiple vehicles, triggering a chain-reaction crash.
A total of six vehicles were involved. Emergency responders, including police, fire crews, and EMS, were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist victims and secure the area.
One Person Dies After Being Rushed to Hospital
Authorities confirmed that two people were initially transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Among them was an 85-year-old woman, who later died due to injuries sustained in the collision. Her identity has not yet been released publicly as officials work to notify family members.
Several other individuals suffered minor injuries but did not require extended hospitalization. Police have not confirmed whether any children were involved as per KUTV.
Horses Injured in Trailer Impact
The crash also involved four horses that were being transported in the trailer attached to the pickup truck. According to police, at least one horse sustained a broken leg as a result of the violent impact. Details on veterinary care or the condition of the remaining horses have not been provided.
Road Closures and Major Traffic Delays
Due to the severity of the crash and debris scattered across the roadway, officials closed U.S. 6 from Canyon Road to Spanish Fork Parkway. Drivers were diverted onto Canyon Road to avoid the collision site.
Authorities originally estimated the closure to last only a few hours. However, cleanup efforts and the investigation required significantly more time. The highway did not reopen until just before 4 a.m. Monday, resulting in roughly eight hours of traffic disruption.
The closure impacted local travel and delays extended toward canyon traffic as well as Spanish Fork’s residential commuting routes.
Investigation Into What Led to the Collision
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by the Spanish Fork Police Department. Weather conditions, possible mechanical issues, and driver impairment factors have not yet been confirmed. Officials have not announced whether the truck driver will face any charges.
