Bessemer Township, Michigan – A winter recreation outing turned tragic in Gogebic County after a 61-year-old Wisconsin man was killed in a snowmobile crash on a popular trail in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, authorities confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred on Trail 2 in Bessemer Township, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and leaving the snowmobiling community mourning the sudden loss.
Fatal Snowmobile Crash Reported in Gogebic County
According to the Michigan State Police (MSP), troopers from the Wakefield Post, along with deputies from the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched to the crash scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
Officers responded after receiving a report that a snowmobiler had crashed along Trail 2, a well-known snowmobile route in the area.
When first responders arrived, they found a man suffering from severe injuries after his snowmobile had left the trail and struck a wooden post.
Victim Identified as Wisconsin Resident
Investigators determined that the victim was a 61-year-old man from Luxemburg, Wisconsin. Police said the man had been traveling eastbound on Trail 2 when, for reasons still under investigation, he left the designated trail, lost control of his snowmobile, and crashed.
The impact with the wooden post caused critical injuries. Emergency medical personnel immediately rendered aid at the scene, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead due to his injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, pending notification of family members.
Drugs and Alcohol Not Believed to Be Factors
Police said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine other possible factors, including trail conditions, speed, and environmental elements that may have played a role.
Snowmobile accidents can become especially dangerous when riders leave marked trails, where obstacles such as posts, trees, or uneven terrain may not be visible in time to avoid a collision.
Multi-Agency Response at the Scene
Several agencies assisted at the scene, highlighting the coordinated response required during winter emergencies in rural areas.
The Michigan State Police were assisted by:
- Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office
- Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
- Beacon Ambulance
- Bessemer Township Fire Department
- Gogebic County Victim’s Services
Officials worked together to secure the area, provide emergency care, and begin the investigation into the fatal crash.
MSP Offers Condolences to Family
In a statement following the incident, Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer, expressed sympathy for the victim’s loved ones.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” Eckola said, acknowledging the devastating impact of the tragedy.
Reminder of Snowmobile Safety Risks
The fatal crash serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with snowmobiling, particularly during the peak winter season when trail traffic increases.
Authorities urge riders to:
- Stay on marked trails
- Adjust speed for trail and weather conditions
- Remain alert for fixed obstacles
- Wear proper protective gear
- Ride with caution, even on familiar routes
Officials also stress the importance of checking trail conditions and visibility before heading out, especially in wooded or rural areas where hazards can be difficult to spot.
While drugs and alcohol have been ruled out, investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. Additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.
