4-year-old Dead, 6-year-old Hurt in Burlingame Crash involving E-Bike and Sedan

Burlingame, CA – A tragic crash that left a 4-year-old boy dead and a 6-year-old girl injured began when an e-bike collided with a sedan, causing the vehicle to accelerate into the children, according to police.

The incident happened Friday night outside the Truffle Poke Bar restaurant on Donnelly Avenue. Authorities say the children were on the sidewalk when the car suddenly came toward them.

How the Crash Happened

Burlingame police reported that a 19-year-old woman from San Mateo was driving a white sedan in a parking lot across the street when the e-bike struck her vehicle. The collision caused the car to lurch forward, cross Donnelly Avenue, and crash into the restaurant’s front area where the children stood.

The 4-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 6-year-old girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is now recovering at Stanford Hospital.

Witness Accounts of Chaos

Witnesses described a terrifying scene as bystanders rushed to help.

“People were screaming and running in to help out. I noticed there was a child on the ground, and people were scattered and screaming, ‘Help, help,’” said Nick Hatzidakis of Daly City as per NBC.

A growing memorial of flowers, candles, and stuffed animals has formed in front of the restaurant as community members come to pay their respects.

Investigation and Driver Cooperation

Police confirmed the driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

While the investigation continues, some residents are questioning whether the incident could have been avoided.

“It’s so sad, so I’m just devastated. It shouldn’t have happened, and I heard an e-bike was involved. Those e-bikes are out of control. They spook me all the time,” said Cathy Murray of Burlingame.

How to Keep Yourself Safe Around E-Bikes and Traffic

Safety experts advise that both drivers and pedestrians remain extra cautious in areas where e-bikes and vehicles share space. E-bikes can reach high speeds quickly, making it difficult for drivers to react in time.

Pedestrians are urged to remain alert when crossing streets or standing near parking lot exits. Drivers should maintain a slow speed in parking areas and anticipate sudden movements from cyclists and e-bike riders. Communities are also exploring regulations on e-bike use to prevent future accidents.
