Portland, OR – A 24-year-old mother, Neilyann Ysam, who had fled to Portland, Oregon in search of safety from domestic violence, was brutally stabbed to death on July 19. Authorities say she was killed in front of her five young children, who were all later rescued unharmed.
Child’s 911 Call Led Police to the Scene
According to newly released court documents, it was Ysam’s 4-year-old daughter who bravely called 911 and told dispatchers: “My dad killed my mom.” Officers from the Portland Police Bureau confirmed that all five children, each under 6 years old, were removed safely from the home.
Arrest of the Suspect
On July 22, authorities arrested 28-year-old S Mate Joseph, Ysam’s former partner. He was first booked into the Clark County Jail in Washington before being extradited to Multnomah County, Oregon. Joseph has since entered a not guilty plea to charges of second-degree murder and burglary during a court hearing.
History of Abuse Between the Couple
Court records reveal that the couple’s troubled history of domestic violence dated back to 2019, when Joseph assaulted Ysam while she was pregnant. At that time, Ysam was found “barefoot, screaming, crying and attempting to get away” from him, according to reports.
During that same incident, Joseph’s 16-year-old brother confronted bystanders with a knife and was fatally shot by police after refusing to drop the weapon. Joseph was subdued with a stun gun, arrested, and later sentenced to just 11 days in jail after pleading guilty to assault in the fourth degree, harassment, and jumping bail.
Details of the Fatal Stabbing
Six years later, Ysam had moved to Portland to live with an aunt in hopes of escaping her abuser. But on July 19, Joseph allegedly forced his way into the residence and attacked her.
In addition to his daughter’s desperate 911 call, Joseph himself allegedly phoned dispatchers, saying he had stabbed a “loved one” but did not know if she was still alive. Police say he then fled the scene, leaving Ysam bleeding to death while her five children remained inside the house.
Children Now in Family Custody
Authorities confirmed that the children were placed under the care of relatives following the incident.
Community Shock and Broader Implications
The case has sent shockwaves through Portland and beyond, reigniting conversations about the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating toll it takes on families. Advocates stress that survivors often face difficulties leaving abusive partners due to fear, limited resources, or repeated cycles of abuse.
Experts also point out that children who witness such violence face long-lasting trauma, making early intervention and stronger protections for victims critical in preventing future tragedies.
Law Enforcement Response
The Portland Police Bureau and prosecutors are urging anyone facing domestic violence to reach out for support. Local shelters, hotlines, and victim assistance programs are available to provide protection and guidance to those at risk.
